From Saturday, Direct Travel (0870 7700370; www.directtravel.co.uk) has a week's self-catering on the south coast of Brittany; a renovated two-bedroom villa 15 minutes' walk from the beach, near the port of La Trinite, costs £117pp per week (four sharing), including Hoverspeed Channel crossing (car and passengers) and a night's baby-sitting.

For active types, Manor Adventure (01584 861333) has a week in a Victorian property in rambling acres near Ludlow, Shropshire, with a programme of activities, including abseiling, kayaking, assault courses and caving with professional instructors. Take a cottage with wooden shutters in western France.
