Yard to hire ethics adviser

Scotland Yard is to employ an ethics adviser to report on the relationship between the police and journalists, David Cameron announced today.

Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson is to invite a senior public figure who understands the media and police to take the role. Mr Cameron said: "This figure will advise [the Commissioner] on how to ensure maximum transparency and public confidence in how the arrangements are working."

The Standard revealed this week that a member of the Royalty Protection group allegedly sold details of the Queen and other members of the royal family to journalists.

Assistant Commissioner John Yates yesterday said corruption in the Met was inevitable.
