Rupert's son has just paid around £1.6 billion to expand Sky's Premiership football coverage, is managing to add new subscribers and has cut prices for a new high-definition TV service. While the Murdochs' empire is tightening its belt, Sky is well-placed in the recession.

Well-connected Old Etonian proved the art market is not yet dead as he presided over a £32.5 million Impressionist sale, including a Degas bronze dancer which went for a record £13 million.

Bafta, chief executive

One of the most powerful women in British film, this has been her big weekend presiding over the Bafta awards which she has helped turn into a real curtainraiser for the Oscars. Berry, chief executive since 2000, is a former TV producer and agent.

HAYLEY ATWELL, 26
actor

Winning plaudits for her turn in A View From the Bridge At The Duke of York's, Atwell is blossoming on both stage and screen. She is also in the TV remake of The Prisoner, following well-received cinema roles in Brideshead Revisited and The Duchess in the autumn.
