Tree rips roof off London bus

Wrecked: the No 119 bus in Croydon today

A BUS driver was taken to hospital today after her double decker hit a tree and its roof was torn off.

A few hours later, a firefighter was injured when his fire and rescue vehicle overturned on the way to an emergency call near Waterloo Bridge.

The No 119 bus was travelling along Purley Way, Croydon, when the accident happened.

The entire roof was ripped off the vehicle. No passengers were on board as the bus was not in service.

The driver was taken to hospital suffering from shock but was allowed to leave after treatment. An investigation has been launched.

A spokeswoman for Metrobus, which runs the route, said: "The roof was damaged by a tree but we are still trying to find out what exactly happened.

"The driver has since been released from hospital so the depot will be talking to her."

The driver of the overturned fire engine was taken to St Thomas' Hospital suffering minor injuries. The vehicle, carrying emergency cutting and lifting equipment, was heading to a road accident in south London from Battersea fire station.

A spokesman for London Fire Brigade said no other vehicles were involved but there were traffic delays as teams worked to clear the fire engine from the road.
