Top hotel chains in crisis talks with 2012 Olympics organisers over 'rip-off' re-sale packages

12 April 2012

Leading hotel groups are considering legal action against London 2012 organisers as a row over rip-off room-pricing for the Olympics escalates.

Chains such as Hilton, Thistle, Guoman and Starwood were said to be taking legal advice over their contracts to supply rooms at preferential rates to organiser Locog.

They were angered after discovering the fair-price rooms were being re-sold at what they consider "grossly-inflated" prices by official 2012 travel agent Thomas Cook. Mayor Boris Johnson has also been drawn into the row as the hotels, represented by the British Hospitality Association, say he has unfairly branded them as rip-off merchants.

A crisis meeting between Locog and the association was held today and both sides hoped to issue a statement to placate the hoteliers and avert legal action.

The row began last week when Thomas Cook published its tariff. One package with
a face value of £1,740 is priced at £6,499 for three nights at the Hyatt Regency Churchill.
