Third day of delays for travellers

13 April 2012

Air passengers were set to face a third day of disruption to their travel plans as cancellations and delays continued to dog flight schedules.

The new stringent security checks were expected to continue to cause severe delays at check-in desks and passengers were warned to arrive at the airport prepared to meet the demands of the new anti-terror regime.

Airlines said they were able to run more flights than they had over the past two days but their full flight schedules were not expected to resume for a number of days.

British Airways said they had cancelled 10 long-haul flights to the US and 21 short-haul flights from Heathrow.

At Gatwick BA has cancelled 10 domestic flights but all planes travelling to Europe from the airport will operate as normal.

The airline said no long-haul flights from Gatwick were cancelled on Saturday but passengers should expect delays.

Passengers flying from Stansted are being urged to arrive prepared as the airport struggles to get back to normal.

An airport spokesman said it was relying on passengers to help themselves and airport staff by arriving early with no hand luggage.

About 30 flights to and from the airport were cancelled on Saturday.

"This morning was very busy as that is when most of our flights head out, but the current status in the terminal is manageable," the spokesman said.
