The Queen shows signs of enjoying Underground trip

Going Underground: the Queen is presented with her own Tube sign at Aldgate
12 April 2012

The Queen was given her own personalised Tube sign during a visit to a London Underground station today.

She picked up the specially commissioned "Buckingham Palace" version of the famous logo on a tour of Aldgate station.

The Queen beamed as the gift was handed over in the ticket hall of the zone one stop.

Howard Collins, London Underground's chief operating officer, said: "We asked the staff what would be an appropriate gift for the Queen.

"They all decided that the symbol of the Underground which is known throughout the world would be perfect, even though there isn't a station there.

"The Queen thought it was marvellous. She said What a fantastic gift'. There was a big smile on her face. She was saying about how busy [the Underground] is. She travelled on the Tube as a young lady."
