TfL rethink over closure of Blackfriars cycle lane

12 April 2012

An outcry from cyclists has forced Transport for London to reopen a consultation on removing a cycle lane from one of the capital's most notorious bridges.

Critics oppose changes to the road layout on the northern side of Blackfriars bridge that are part of a £6 million transformation of the railway station. In 2004 Vicki McCreery, who was crushed by a bus, became the second cyclist in 15 months to die on the bridge.

The plans would involve the removal of the cycle lane outside the station entrance to create a third lane for traffic and extra pavement space for the increased number of pedestrians.

Responses to the reopened consultation can be sent to STEngagement@tfl.gov.uk until April 15.
