Stars show for theatre awards

The West End's finest were at the Savoy today to discover who has won the Evening Standard Theatre Awards.

Rory Bremner presented the lunchtime ceremony where the 10 prestigious awards were announced. Guests included Dame Maggie Smith, Elaine Paige, Ned Beatty, Peter Bowles, Martine McCutcheon and Alexandra Jay.

Among those presenting prizes were Nigel Planer, Eddie Izzard, Miranda Richardson and Sir Peter Hall.

The best actor was Alex Jennings, for The Relapse and The Winter's Tale; best actress was Fiona Shaw for Medea.

Medea also won The Sydney Edwards Award for best director, which went to Deborah Warner.

Three shows were in the running for the Carlton TV best musical prize: Merrily We Roll Along, My Fair Lady and the winner, the Broadway production of Kiss Me, Kate.

Best comedy was Alistair Beaton's political satire Feelgood, and the outstanding newcomer was Rufus Norris, for Afore Night Come.
