Smokers more likely to go blind

Smokers are four times as likely to go blind as those who do not smoke, it emerged today.

Researchers have found that tobacco users are vulnerable to the most common cause of adult blindness, age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Smoking could be behind as many as one in five of all UK cases. Researchers said giving up smoking helped reduce the risk of AMD in later life.
