Six minutes in the car is all it takes to rev up to a row

13 April 2012

Are we there yet, are we there yet, are we there yet, are we there yet...

This refrain, top of the pops for children on car trips, is enough to fray the temper of the most patient mummy and daddy.

And the vast majority, it seems, will crack within just six minutes.

The survey of 1,000 male drivers found that the average family begins arguing within 12 minutes of setting off on a car journey.

Unsurprisingly, the peace and quiet lasts only half as long if the passengers include children under ten.

As a result, married men and those with partners said they prefer to drive alone.

Seven in ten of the respondents to the Discovery Turbo channel survey said they argue with their partner when behind the wheel, and one in three feel stressed when driving

their children. In contrast, the rush-hour commute is a breeze, with eight in ten saying they arrive at work without feeling the slightest bit stressed.

The survey also confirmed just how much men love their motors - half said they would prefer to drive round the Grand Prix track at Silverstone than have sex with their partner.

And they detest other drivers in equal measure. Half of men think fellow road users are 'idiotic' and two-thirds find other drivers 'annoying and aggressive'.

Regionally, men in the Midlands and Wales are the most likely to have family rows, and admit to driving the most dangerously.

Men in northern England and Scotland are the most likely to swear at other drivers, speed, have accidents and drink and drive.

Those in London and southern England appear to have the best driving manners.
