Scout, 12, impaled on tree

13 April 2012

A scout was impaled on a sharp tree stump when he slipped as he carried a canoe down the bank of a lake. Nick Biffin, 12, fell forward and landed on the three-inch stake, which was hidden in reeds.

The youngster managed to drag himself off the stump as Scout leaders, including his father Brian, went to his aid. Nick, from the 28th Fleet Scout Group in Hampshire, lay in pain for 30 minutes before an air ambulance took him from the remote campsite near Swanage, Dorset, to hospital in Dorchester. His condition was today described as "stable".
