  • One in four women will experience violence at the hands of a partner and the same proportion will be sexually assaulted or raped, normally by someone they know
  • One in 20 women have been the victim of rape
  • One emergency call a minute is received about domestic violence
  • One in three adults and young people say hitting a woman is "OK" under certain circumstances
  • There were 14,000 recorded rapes last year, an eight per cent increase
  • 167 women are raped every day
  • Fewer than three in 10 domestic violence incidents reported to police result in conviction
  • Up to 1,420 women were trafficked into the UK for sexual exploitation in 1998
