Pubs merger talks go sour

TAKEOVER talk in the pubs sector may be reignited by news that Scottish & Newcastle has been in discussions with Six Continents. The duo had hoped to merge their two pub estates and float them off into a separate business. But talks fell apart a fortnight ago after failing to reach a deal.

Six Continents owns the All Bar One and O'Neills chains, while S&N's brands include Chef & Brewer and Millers. Uniting the two would have created a £4.5bn powerhouse with around 3,400 pubs.
