Probe into Zac Goldsmith poll spending

Probe: Zac Goldsmith
12 April 2012

Zac Goldsmith is to face an official inquiry into allegations that he breached general election spending limits.

The Electoral Commission has deemed the claims against the Richmond Park MP as "a case under review".

Its decision means it has up to 90 days to check whether the 1983 Representation of the People's Act was broken by the Goldsmith campaign.

Channel 4 News last week alleged that the campaign's posters and "I Back Zac" jackets had breached spending limits.

The Commission can refer the case to the police. Mr Goldsmith denies the claims and is being backed by David Cameron and Conservative Central Office.
