Premiership star to stand trial for driving offences

13 April 2012

A Premiership footballer accused of driving through a series of red lights while under the influence of alcohol was committed for trial today.

Southampton winger Fabrice Fernandes, 24, is charged with driving with excess alcohol and dangerous driving after police stopped him in his black Porsche at 4am on May 10 in central London and ordered him to take a breath test.

Fernandes, of Pacific Close, Southampton, wore a pink, striped Ralph Lauren shirt and dark trousers during the brief hearing at Bow Street Magistrates' Court in central London and spoke only to confirm his name, age and address.

The French player listened to proceedings via an interpreter and has yet to enter a plea.

District Judge Timothy Workman told Fernandes he would be committed to stand trial at Southwark Crown Court but a further charge of failing to stop for a constable would be adjourned and remain at Bow Street Magistrates' Court.

Fernandes was released on unconditional bail and will appear at Southwark Crown Court on September 9.
