Police to march in pay demo

Police officers are planning a mass rally in Whitehall to protest against David Blunkett's determination to press ahead with reform of the service, it was reported today.

Police leaders are today warning of mass resignations if the Home Secretary drives through his pay and conditions package, which officers voted against by 10 to one. They are now taking steps towards overturning an 83-year-old ban on strike action.

Off-duty members of the Police Federation plan to march past Downing Street soon to show their discontent.

And Bob Elder, chairman of the Police Federation Constables' Committee, said: "Officers may use their feet - they'll leave the service. That's a very real fear."
