13 April 2012

Police today named a three-year-old boy who was run over and killed at Gatwick Airport while seeing off his grandparents.

Rhys Edward Hood, from Brecon in Wales, died under the wheels of a car at the West Sussex airport's North Terminal car park.

The accident happened in car park five at 8.25am on Saturday as his family unloaded holiday luggage for his grandparents who were catching a flight from the terminal.

Rhys was taken to the East Surrey Hospital in Redhill where he died from his injuries.

An ambulance spokesman described the incident as a "horrible freak accident", adding that both the driver of the car and members of the boy's family saw it happen.

A Sussex Police investigation was continuing today and police repeated their appeal for anyone in the car park between 8.20am and 8.30am on Saturday who saw anything to come forward.
