'No sympathy' for strikers

Many Londoners found themselves walking to work this morning.

Striking Tube workers who brought chaos to the capital's underground have been dealt a blow by a new poll which shows the overwhelming majority of Londoners do not back their action.

The survey, from This is London, found a massive 93 per cent of Londoners had 'no sympathy' for the strikers.

More than 1,000 people took part in the poll in a matter of hours, showing the depth of anger that many commuters feel about the RMT union's decision to call a 24-hour stoppage.

The RMT wants a 35-hour, four-day week and a minimum wage of £22,000 a year for station staff, which would equate to a rise of 16 per cent. London Underground has offered a two-year deal worth 6.75 per cent.

Mayor of London Ken Livingstone has said that 200 jobs would be lost under the RMT's scheme and that the demands for a four-day week would lead to higher Tube fares.

Tony Blair has also criticised the decision to strike, which left millions of people facing chaotic journeys into work this morning.

The strike is due to end at 6.30pm tonight.

What they're saying on our messageboards:

"What they have now is a large salary, reasonable hours and jobs for life and a good pension scheme - while the rest of us struggle to get into work for less pay"

"All business has this wonderful knack of squeezing every last drop of blood out of us. Let them strike for a better deal, why not?"

"They do not care about fellow workers or about anyone else in society"
