News International warns staff of another 110 job cuts

12 April 2012

News International's chief executive Tom Mockridge today admitted the phone-hacking scandal had been an "extremely testing time for everyone" and revealed the company is to make major job cuts.

In an email to 3,000 employees, the New Zealand-born executive also revealed that just 23 jobs had been made available to the almost 300 News of the World staff axed when the newspaper closed in July. The Murdoch media empire is now seeking to reduce the workforce by 110.

Mr Mockridge replaced Rebekah Brooks in July when it emerged the defunct Sunday tabloid hacked into the voicemails of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler when she was editor in 2003. When the paper closed, Ms Brooks promised all NoW staff that the company would find them jobs.

Mr Mockridge's email today said: "Regarding the News of the World, 89 people have opted to take up the enhanced redundancy terms on offer.

"We continue to do everything we can to find jobs for those who were directly affected by the closure and already 23 positions around the business have been made available. We are also developing a digital business which will offer a further 21 jobs.

"We expect to reduce the News International workforce by 110 staff positions. In addition there will be discussions with editors about the use of casuals."
