Netherlands makes prostitutes pay tax

The Dutch government is demanding prostitutes pay income tax for the first time.

Janneke Verheggen, of the country's Tax Service, said now was the right time to "increase compliance". The Netherlands made prostitution legal in 2000.

Few supporters of legalised prostitution are protesting at the move — though many do not believe that tax law can be enforced in an all-cash industry.
