Mother charged over attempted 'baby slave' sale

12 April 2012

A mother accused of trying to sell her 11-month-old daughter for £35,000 to a childless couple appeared in court charged with slavery.

The 28-year-old Indian woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, carried the infant to a Stratford hotel room to conclude the deal, Inner London crown court was told.

Christopher Foulkes, prosecuting, said: "Slavery involves exercising over a person any or all of the rights of ownership. No one, not even a parent, is allowed to own another person."

He said the mother's 31-year-old husband, who is not the father of the child, was also involved.

Mohammad Javaid, 48, is accused of brokering the sale. Javaid, of Ilford, and the couple, of Forest Gate, deny conspiracy to commit child cruelty and holding a person in slavery.

The trial continues.
