Michael Brandon's top five tips...

12 April 2012

The key to learning to meditate is to use the right tools. And remember, it can take as little as five minutes a day. "Five minutes in the morning is enough, although 15 to 20 is ideal. This sets you up for the day," says Michael. Here's how to begin meditating:

1: Choose a quiet spot, your own private place. "If you can, choose a quiet place at home and light a candle," says Michael.

2: Use sound. "You want something repetitive but calming, like the sound of a fountain. You don't need to chant, but if you have trouble meditating, try listening to some relaxing tapes, like those of rushing waves, or bells or whale music. You need something that will not distract your mind, but allow it to be turned off.

3: Sit comfortably. "Don't lie down or you might be tempted to sleep. Instead, sit against a wall with a cushion under your bottom to relieve the strain on your legs. If you are uncomfortable, your mind will wander."

4: Focus on your breathing. "Let your breath come naturally. Don't try to control it, but just listen to yourself breathing and feel the air flowing in and out of your lungs."

5: Focus your mind. "Your mind will want to escape, but don't let it. You will feel yourself swimming within as you relax. Your heart rate lowers and your breathing slows. If your mind starts to wander, bring it back to focus on your breathing."
