Meanest Britons 'live in the South-East'

Affluent residents of the South-East are the meanest in Britain.

Parts of London, Guildford, Kingston-upon-Thames and St Albans may be among the wealthiest but they are also the least generous, said the Giving Campaign.

Its research found council-house residents were the most charitable, while high earners and the well-off kept their hands in their pockets.

East Enders and South-East Londoners are the most charitable people in London. West Londoners and those in Bloomsbury and Holborn are least likely to give to the needy.

Giving Campaign director Amanda Delew said: "Although the better-off have more money than ever, it is poorer people who are giving their money away.

"While there are many wealthy people who do give to charity, there are too many who don't."

The 10 least charitable areas are London, Harrow, Twickenham, Kingston-upon-Thames, Ilford, Croydon, Southall, Guildford, Slough and St Albans.
