A London woman is walking to her new home — 1,220 miles away in Spain.

Former Royal Opera House usher Sila Sabrado, 29, set off on her 11-week journey on Tuesday after five years in Greenwich.

She headed towards Portsmouth to catch a ferry, and then continues through France to her destination of Galicia in north-west Spain.

The rest of her belongings have already been shipped ahead. Miss Sabrado, originally from Spain, opted to take on the trek to raise money for charity and to urge people to cut down on CO2 emissions. She said: “I just thought why not walk rather than catch a flight. I have always been environmentally aware and thought this may be a good opportunity to fight CO2 emissions.”

As well as hoping to raise £1,966 — or one pound a kilometre — for the Central London Samaritans, Miss Sabrado is walking for charity DoNation, which encourages donors to offer carbon-decreasing pledges rather than money.

Miss Sabrado will be joined by numerous friends and family along the way and will meet her boyfriend Tiego Domingues on her 30th birthday in July. She said there was only so much solitude she could take.
