John Terry faces losing £5m sponsorship... and his wife

John Terry could lose £5 million in sponsorship deals as a result of his affair with former lingerie model Vanessa Perroncel.

Experts say his relationship with the former partner of team-mate Wayne Bridge will prevent him from securing the contracts enjoyed by previous England captains.

Terry, 29, now has little prospect of emulating David Beckham, who was a magnet to sponsors such as Vodafone, Gillette and Pepsi.

They offered endorsement contracts estimated to be worth between £3 million and £5 million each.

Andy Sutherden, managing director of sports marketing and sponsorship at Hill & Knowlton, said: "There are not many of these deals around and Terry will be very unlikely to snap one up after what has happened.

"People who manage these brands' budgets want trust and transparency from their ambassadors but Terry has not got a very good track record."

However, Mr Sutherden said Terry's ability to sell sports goods as "one of the best footballers on the planet" may not be harmed.

He has a £4 million boot deal with Umbro, thought to be his only contract as an individual player. The company has refused to comment this week.

His other sponsor earnings are tied in with Samsung's deal with Chelsea and the Football Association's England team backers.

If Terry loses the England armband he will miss out on an estimated £250,000 captain's bonus from the team's sponsorship cash share-out.

He may hold talks on the matter as early as this evening with England team manager Fabio Capello who arrives back from Switzerland today.

Terry's wife, Toni Poole, 28, who has fled to Dubai with her twin daughters to escape the media storm, said: "I just don't know what to do ... This is very upsetting."
