In the final three months of last year construction work was started on 2,024 private homes in London, up from the record low of 1,523 in the same months of 2009. The news was even better on social housing with work starting on 2,572 homes in the final quarter, up from 1,740.

Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, said: "There is a growing belief that the worst is now behind us and we're on the road to recovery."
