Despite spending nearly £4billion at the weekend, plenty of Britons have such a dull time they invent stories to tell workmates on Monday.

Ten per cent of people make up tales about their exploits to appear more interesting to colleagues - usually the ones who spent the two days in the pub, research shows.

A typical Saturday and Sunday's 'entertainment' costs £72 a head but 60 per cent of people feel they do not do enough. Those who take day trips, visit museums or take part in sport say they feel most refreshed when it is time to go back at work.

The study of 1,000 people was commissioned by Vauxhall cars. Spokesman Sara Nicholson said: 'The people who come back on Monday pleased that they made the most of their 48 hours shows how important it is to have fun at the weekend.'
