Girl, eight, attacked in park

Detectives investigating the attempted rape of an eight-year-old girl were today continuing to question a teenager arrested in connection with the offence.

The 18-year-old from Colchester, in Essex, was held last night and taken to the town's police station for questioning.

The girl was playing alone at a nature reserve and recreation area next to a housing estate in Colchester, Essex, on Sunday when she was sexually assaulted.

Chief Superintendent Dave Murthwaite, said: "The girl is coping remarkably well and receiving strong support from her family.

"I am very grateful for the help and support from the community the police have received."

Police are appealing for anyone who has any information about the incident to come forward.
