Foxes can be tamed - study

13 April 2012

Experimental breeding has shown that the fox could become Man's new best friend, it was revealed today.

Scientists at a fur farm in Siberia have spent 45 years "domesticating" generations of foxes.

The result is a population of tame foxes that wag their tails and greet humans with excited barks.

Unlike the all-black silver foxes from which they are descended, they have big floppy ears, curly tails, and their faces are rounder and more puppy-like than those of their wild cousins.

The foxes behave in much the same way as pet dogs, according to the study in the journal Current Biology.
