Football club name-check draws boos at Lovebox

Ben Bailey12 April 2012

Doves inadvertently drew boos from a festival crowd tonight when they name-checked their favourite football team Manchester City.

Frontman Jimi Goodwin mentioned the club while making banter to the audience at London's Lovebox Festival as band mates tuned up.

He responded to the jeers by telling fans to watch out for next season, and the rest of the set went down a storm.

Lovebox, held in Victoria Park in East London, is in its seventh year. Also among this weekend's line-up was Florence and the Machine.

Both acts have been tipped as among the early favourites to win this year's Barclaycard Mercury Prize - even though the nominations will not be announced until later this week.

The first two Doves albums, Lost Souls and The Last Broadcast, were both shortlisted for the Mercury Prize but missed out on the gong.
