Appeal: Colt Rodgers

The brother of murdered bride Chanel Taylor today made an emotional appeal to his father to give himself up.

Terry Rodgers disappeared after his daughter Chanel, 23, was shot dead in her home. He had given her away at her wedding only seven weeks earlier, but is now the prime suspect in the murder.

Today his son Colt, 19, called for him to come forward and help the family make sense of the tragedy. "Over the past few days our lives have been turned upside-down. Chanel's death has left so many unanswered questions," he said.

"Dad, we need your help to make sense of this nightmare. I am trying to be strong, especially for Mum, but we are all devastated. We've always been close, it was only the other week we were all together sharing Chanel's big day.

At the press conference at Nottinghamshire police HQ, he added: "If you are watching or listening, we need you to come forward for Chanel's sake and yours."

Chanel was found dead by her husband Lee, 24, at their terraced house in Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire, at around 1pm on Friday. She had been blasted with both barrels of a shotgun. Lee held her for an hour, screaming: "Why?"

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Cottee, leading the investigation, said Rodgers was the "prime suspect" and there had been two sightings of him walking alone in Nottingham the next day.

He said: "We are working on the basis Terry was in the house when Lee left for work that morning." The gun has not been recovered and there are fears Rodgers may still have it. Mr Cottee warned the public not to approach him.

Rodgers, 55, had been living with Chanel, a trainee hairdresser, and Lee for several weeks after his wife Anne threw him out. There was speculation today he may have shot his daughter to spite his wife.

Lee's best friend Darren Fletcher told the Mirror: "I wonder if Terry snapped and killed Chanel to hurt Anne. If he couldn't have Anne maybe he decided to take away ... their daughter. There didn't seem to be a problem before this."

Chanel's former boss at a hairdressing salon added: "I'd say he could be a possessive man. Chanel did whatever he said."

Mr Cottee confirmed Rodgers had split from his wife, but added: "We don't know the motive. The relationship between Terry and Chanel was good."

He said the former security man, who was known to police, had recently sold his business, but was in no financial difficulty.
