Diageo cheer in major markets

SPIRITS group Diageo sought to give investors a Monday morning tonic, boasting that it hit its targets in key markets such as the UK and US for the six months ended June.

Volume growth of brands such as Smirnoff vodka, Johnnie Walker scotch and Guinness were higher than the same period last year. Diageo it benefited from the inclusion of the Seagram brands - such as Captain Morgan - which it bought last Decembver. Ready-to-drink product Smirnoff Ice doubled volumes, though sales of Captain Morgan Gold, launched in May, failed to meet expectations.

The group's full-year results due on 5 September.
