Danger that lurks in the woods

12 April 2012

? Black bears have killed 40 people in the United States in the last 100 years.

? They are about 3ft at the shoulder and weigh an average 135-350lb but can be much more.

? They can run at 35mph.

? There are about 200,000 and are found in most US states.

? Omnivores, they will eat anything, gorging until their stomachs can hold no more.

? Protected in US National Parks, many have lost any fear of man, even begging for handouts at the roadside.

? Wild bears live up to 25 years.

? Advice to humans confronted by one is: stay calm, do not run. Back away slowly, avoid blocking its escape route, pick up children so they don't run or scream, avoid eye contact, talk in a soothing voice.
