A CYCLIST died after he was in collision with a refuse lorry.

It is thought the man, 45, was riding home from work when the accident involving a Newham council vehicle happened in Barking Road, Plaistow.

The man was taken to hospital suffering serious head injuries at about 5.30pm yesterday. Doctors then transferred him to a specialist trauma unit at Newham General Hospital where surgeons were unable to save his life.

A Newham council spokeswoman said: "We are aware of an accident involving one of our refuse vehicles and would like to express our condolences to the deceased man's family and friends. We will, of course, co-operate fully with the police investigation."

A 16-year-old girl died after she was knocked off a bicycle on Christmas Eve in Dagenham.
