Cyclist dies in hit-and-run with lorry

A female cyclist has died after a hit-and-run crash with a lorry at a busy junction during the evening rush hour.

The unnamed woman was struck by the vehicle at 5.30pm on Friday in Greenwich, south east London. Police are searching for the driver, who did not stop at the scene.

Members of local cycling group Greenwich Cyclists have placed a white-painted bicycle at the scene of the crash as a road-side memorial.

Club member Barry Mason said: "The police will catch this person. We know very well that there are a lot of cameras in that area.

"The driver has obviously compounded the problem by just fleeing the scene but they will be caught and the judge will take a very dim view of that."

The incident happened at the junction of Woolwich Road and the Kent-bound A102(M), a major junction. The victim has not yet been identified.

Mr Mason added: "I know that junction well. It needs traffic calming because it's a very busy junction used by a lot of frustrated motorists who, because Greenwich is jammed with traffic, are just itching to get out onto the big trunk road."

Police said the lorry had a blue plastic or canvas covering on its side and appealed for witnesses.

Anyone with information should call the Collision Investigation Unit at Catford Traffic Garage on 020 8285 1574.
