Council chief quits after Climbié ²ow

A senior official at the council blamed for the death of Victoria Climbie has resigned after an £8 million overspend as the authority tried to remedy bad practices.

David Derbyshire quit as assistant social services director at Haringey council, which was criticised for failing to spot the serial abuse suffered by the eight-yearold before her death in 2000.

The Labour-run council overspent while trying to improve its social services department after a damning inquiry by Lord Laming. Ron Aitken, Liberal Democrat social services spokesman in Haringey, said: "This appears to be the final reckoning and fallout from the council's mishandling of the Climbie ase."
