Cliffhanger for trapped tourist

A photographer who spent two nights trapped on a cliff ate leaves and wrapped himself in newspaper to keep warm after getting lost during a holiday walk.

Mike Howell, 54, of Colindale, north London, slipped as he was trying to take a photograph on the Isle of Wight on Monday night. Thorns ripped at his arms and legs as he plunged into dense undergrowth and got trapped. There was no mobile phone signal for him to call his partner Caroline Veasey, who had reported him missing.

Mr Howell's cries were eventually heard by a dog walker and coastguards took two hours to find him above Binnell Bay in Ventnor and winch him to safety.
