Canadian mail order ‘prince of pot’ faces US court

12 April 2012

Canada's "Prince of Pot" was extradited to Seattle, Washington State, to face charges of selling millions of marijuana seeds to US customers.

Marc Emery, 52, of Vancouver, claimed to have made $3 million a year through his mail order business. He will plead guilty to conspiracy to manufacture marijuana in exchange for an agreed five years in prison.

The US Drug Enforcement Administration said Emery's marijuana seeds have been traced across America - being found in Indiana, Florida, California, Tennessee, Montana, Virginia, Michigan, New Jersey and North Dakota.

Emery is known for advocating marijuana law reform, and his supporters accused the US of a politically motivated prosecution to silence him. Emery's wife, Jodie, led a protest march through Vancouver with about 60 people who waved marijuana-leaf flags and shouted "Free Marc Emery".

His lawyer, Kirk Tousaw, said: "It's a dark day for Canada. Now the fight begins to bring him home."
