Buying boom is almost over

High Street stores suffered their biggest slump in sales for more than two years last month, suggesting the consumer spending boom may be running out of steam.

Official figures today showed the biggest casualty was the sale of clothes and shoes which dropped by 5.2 per cent, but household goods increased by 2.2 per cent, boosted in part by football fans buying new television sets for the World Cup.
