Au pair is charged with baby murder

A teenage au pair was due in court today after being charged with the murder of a baby in her care.

Eva Nowakowska is accused of shaking Jonathan Adleye to death in his home in Willesden. The 19- year- old is believed to have been looking after him alone while his parents were out.

She is understood to have run to a neighbour's house in a panic at around 7pm last Thursday, saying that she couldn't wake the baby. The neighbour called an ambulance and paramedics took the 10-month-old boy to St Mary's Hospital in Paddington.

Doctors found the baby had suffered severe brain damage and retinal damage - injuries that were judged to be consistent with being shaken rigorously. Police were called in but the baby died soon afterwards.

Detectives arrested Nowakowska, who is thought to be Polish. She is due to appear at Brent Magistrates Court after being formally charged with murder last night.
