A 53-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a female torso found in a suitcase dumped in a London canal, police said.

The arrest came after a manhunt for the owner of a council flat in Highbury where officers believe the body may have been dismembered.

The man was held in the West Country this morning and is being taken to London where he will be held for questioning, a Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said.

The torso was found in Regent's Canal on Saturday.

"We do not have any other body parts as yet and we still need to identify the victim," the police spokeswoman added.
