American expats in London feel 'betrayed' by US election results

American Democrat supporters living in London were left stunned this morning after Republican candidate Donald Trump stormed to victory in the US presidential race.

Hundreds of expat Americans met at Marylebone’s Sports Bar and Grill in anticipation of Hillary Clinton becoming the first female President of the United States.

Supporters watched on in dismay as Clinton failed to retain Democrat states from Barack Obama’s victory in 2012.

One supporter, Robert Platt, said: “I’m feeling a bit betrayed by my own country, by my own people. This is absolutely beyond belief.

“I never thought Trump would get as far as he did and I believe that today he managed to win and it’s just disappointing on every level.”

Almost every major poll had Hillary Clinton as the next President of the USA, but Trump defied the odds to claim the keys to the White House.

Robert Ranelli, Chair of Democrats Abroad, said: “All I can think of is that they bought into Donald Trump's assertion that we need to shake up Washington to somebody different, somebody completely new.

“He has tapped into something that Americans are looking for.”
