A huge villa once owned by original James Bond star Sean Connery is for sale for £26.7 million on the French Riviera.

The retired Scottish actor, knighted in 2005 and now aged 89, lived at Villa Le Roc Fleuri with his wife, Moroccan-French painter Micheline Roquebrune, reportedly for 12 years during the Seventies and Eighties.

Neighbours still call it “Sean Connery’s house”, says Knight Frank, which is marketing the six-storey villa. It is located about an hour’s drive from Terre Blanche – a plot of land bigger than Monaco and owned for 20 years by Connery who dreamed of turning it into a five-star golf resort.

Imposing gates set in stone towers sit at the top of a sweeping drive leading to one end of the Twenties-built villa, which occupies an elevated coastal spot on the Cap de Nice between Cannes and Monaco.

The five-bedroom classic-style mansion, adorned with vines and colourful climbing plants, is stunning - but inevitably overshadowed by the breathtaking views to Port de Nice and the Med.

Inside, a grand reception and entrance hall with mosaic-tiled floor leads to a main living room with a terrace beyond, showcasing those spectacular sea views.

The striking stone staircase leads to a master bedroom floor, with French patio doors opening to a balcony. Alternatively, a lift provides access to all floors.

Of course there is also an impressive wine cellar, along with a gym with sauna and hammam spa.

Adjoining the main villa is a two-car garage with a self-contained staff apartment above.

The current owners increased the size of the property over several years, buying two adjoining homes that now serve as guest villas and combining the grounds to cover just over an acre.

Edward de Mallet Morgan of Knight Frank highlights the French Riviera’s “sense of stardust” as a particular draw to the area - and this “beautifully located waterfront home” in particular.

“Within easy reach of Nice, Cap Ferrat and Monaco, this circa 1,000 square metre, Belle Epoque-styled villa is perched on a hillside among an oasis of beautiful, newly renovated terraced gardens running down to the sea, with an indoor swimming pool, outdoor saltwater swimming pool, two independent guest villas and jaw-dropping views along the glittering Cote d’Azur,” says De Mallet Morgan.
