Don’t stop believing: Olympian Callum Hawkin's advice to conquer the Big Half for Felix

British running star Callum Hawkins today offered his tips for London’s new half marathon, telling runners: “Go and enjoy it!”

Thousands of competitors will take part in the Big Half on Sunday, including 57 people fundraising for The Felix Project to help hungry children.

Olympian Hawkins, 25, who will line up against Sir Mo Farah and Kenyan star Daniel Wanjiru, advised runners:

Don’t overdo training in the final stretch. You’re better a bit fresher on the day. Just do whatever you consider to be light — enough to keep up energy levels and stave off lethargy.

Eat well. Right before the race, focus on carbohydrate-rich foods such as rice and pasta, as well as a bit of protein. For dinner the day before, I’ll go for spaghetti Bolognese. Don’t try anything you’ve never tried before.

Get a good night’s sleep. Then get up in enough time for your body to wake up. Don’t eat too close to the race. I go for porridge three hours before, then something lighter two hours before.

Don’t wear anything new on Sunday — wear what you know is comfortable. Warm up well. I start about an hour before the race.

To hydrate in preparation, drink lots of little sips. For a half-marathon I usually don’t drink anything during the race but if you do, take a sip and hold it for a minute then throw it away.

Have a pace in mind and stick to that for the first half. Then reassess halfway and, if you’re feeling good, you can push on harder. There’s a point where you are hurting and think you’re dying, but if someone shouts you on, you can overcome the pain. Think about all the hard work you’ve put into it and have confidence in it.

Don’t stress too much — a little nerves is useful but keep it light-hearted.
