BEST FOR CHEESE FIENDS: SALON

With a small restaurant upstairs and a deli/café/bar downstairs, this Brixton Market joint is a firm foodie favourite. Whether you’re eating from the set menu at night or gorging on grilled cheese sandwiches (£4-£6.50) and British charcuterie by day, you’ll be eating carefully chosen ingredients, locally sourced where possible.

BEST FOR A FILLING LUNCH: TRADE

Hearty: Trade

The sandwiches here are hearty and packed. As well as very good grilled brioche buns, chock-full of smoked turkey or slow-cooked pork, you can get grilled sourdough sandwiches filled with a melting combination of fontina, Swiss and Cheddar, and topped with chorizo, smoked tomato chilli jam or pastrami (£4.95-£8.95).

BEST FOR LATE-NIGHT MUNCHIES: MELT ROOM

Oozy: Melt Room

Founder Andrey Datsenko opened this little place dedicated to grilled cheese sandwiches last month. There are nine on offer (plus salads, soups and breakfast items), oozing with cheese and everything from barbecued chicken or slow-roasted lamb shoulder to roasted beetroot with broad beans and feta (£4.50-£7).
