London brunch breakdown: Poco near Broadway Market

East Londoners are lucky to have this as a neighbourhood brunch joint, says Kate Lough

If you're bored of the brunch classics such as eggs Benedict, try out this moreish new restaurant in Hackney.

What’s on the menu: Brunch with a Spanish/Moorish twist that jazzes up egg-based dishes with ingredients like harissa, merguez sausage and chorizo. Our top order was the Moorish scrambled eggs, which mixed chorizo, coriander and homemade harissa into the usual eggs on sourdough offering. For something sweet, round it all off with some churros and chocolate to share.

Try and bag one of the communal high tables - the others can be a bit cramped - and settle in for a jolly midday session with friends bolstered by its brunch cocktails. The Stellacello spritz (Grapefruit liqueur topped wtih fizz) was particularly refreshing for a fuzzy head - or if you’re a Bloody Mary fiend, the harissa version will gladly kick your hangover out of the park.

Where is it: It’s a great spot in a former bike café just over the bridge from bustling Broadway Market. It’s not a bad place to escape the choc-a-block crowds at the Saturday market.

Moorish Scrambled eggs

Who’s behind it: Tom Hunt, author of The Natural Cook and owner of Poco in Bristol, where he has won awards for his ‘seasonal tapas’ using good English ingredients. Hunt’s tried to main the locality at his new outpost of Poco, which means ingredients are sourced from a 50-100 miule radius. So you’ll find cheese from Kappacasein Dairy and chard from Dagenham Community Farm.

When can I try it: until 3pm on weekdays and 4-30pm on weekends.
