Jimmy Garcia launches pop-up on Emirates Air Line

Garcia will serve up food and wine 50 metres above the Thames
High-class venue: chef Jimmy Garcia will serve a three-course dinner and cocktails on the Emirates Air Line

Londoners with a head for heights can dine above the Thames at a pop-up restaurant in a cable car.

For one night only during London Food Month, 17 of the Emirates Air Line cable car gondolas will be transformed into four-seater dining pods more than 50 metres above the river.

Guests arrive at the terminal in North Greenwich for a glass of champagne and canapés. A starter of scallops with apple gel, fresh apple, maple pancetta and sea herbs will be served.

They will then be escorted to their cable car and enjoy the main: chicken ballotine with a chicken drumette, crispy chicken skin and burnt onion purée.

There will be panoramic views of The O2, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Canary Wharf and Thames Barrier. Cars usually take 10 minutes to cross but for the event will be slowed down to 18.

After landing at Royal Victoria Dock, guests will have dessert: an edible garden with Oreo and white chocolate cheesecake buried under soil, plant pots, stones and leaves made from chocolate, and mushrooms made from meringue. A salted caramel sauce is served in a little watering can.

Diners then choose whether to enjoy an after-dinner cocktail and petits fours where they are or on the cable car going back to the other side. The terminal will also host a doughnut station where they can make their own sweet treats. The line will stay open to the public throughout the event on June 8.

Dinner costs £75 including four drinks — champagne, a glass of wine, a dessert wine and a cocktail. Former City worker turned chef Jimmy Garcia is behind the event, inspired by a similar pop-up he did on the Air Line in 2015 to launch his book Social Eats. He said: “Ever since then we’ve been working with the guys here to do another one. London Food Month seemed like the perfect time.”

Garcia, 29, who previously opened a pop-up restaurant in the front room of his home in Balham, will on May 20 open The BBQ Club on the South Bank. Diners will be served a six-course tasting menu cooked in front of them.
