Five places to eat sausages in London

Sausage cafe: S&M is worth a try
10 April 2012

The Pontefract Castle
71 Wigmore Street, W1 (020 7935 8034, www.nicholsonspubs.co.uk)

The Nicholson's group, with more than 40 pubs in London, takes sausages seriously. The range includes one made from pork and Bombardier bitter; a Cumberland made to an old recipe from the Lake District; and a Scottish sausage combining venison, juniper berries and gin.

The Stockpot
38 Panton Street, SW1 (020 7839 5142)

For decades, the Stockpot has been a haunt for students and other cheap-eat addicts. Cumberland sausages, mashed potato and onion gravy costs £5.90 — great value for the West End.

Kurz & Lang
1 St John Street, EC1 (020 7993 2923, www.kurzandlang.co.uk)

Kurz & Lang has bratwurst, rindswurst, currywurst as well as weisse beer, lagers and pilsener. Wurst, sauerkraut, potato, bread, £6.30.

S&M Café
48 Brushfield Street, E1 (020 7247 2252, www.sandmcafe.co.uk)

Between the wars there were many "SP&O" restaurants in London (the letters stood for "sausage, potato and onion gravy"). The small chain of S&M cafés has inherited their mantle.

Brasserie Toulouse Lautrec
140 Newington Butts, SE11 (020 7582 6800, brasserietoulouselautrec.co.uk)

This new-ish, informal, rather French brasserie does a good Toulouse sausage (British pork, French recipe). Look for it on the "de jour" set menu and it will be accompanied by "pommes purée" — not mash, this is a silkier thing — and a red onion sauce.
