Marks and Spencer will be selling stoneless avocados, which are less of a threat to home cooks who are at risk of slicing their hands while opening traditional ones containing stones.

The supermarket is selling a version of the fruit without the stone in the middle saying it will cut down preparation time.

Earlier this year there were warnings about avocados from a leading doctor.

Plastic surgeon Simon Eccles has said he treats about four patients a week at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for such wounds, with staff dubbing the injury "avocado hand".

The stoneless version of the fruit is called a cocktail avocado. Measuring five to eight centimetres in length, they are slightly smaller than a regular avocado and more elongated.

Unlike avocados that we are used to buying in the shops, these ones have edible skin and do not come with a stone in the middle.

The stoneless version of the fruit is made by growing un-pollinated avocados.

Charlotte Curtis, M&S agronomist, says: “We’ve had the mini, the giant, ready-sliced and we’re now launching the holy grail of avocados – stoneless! This amazing fruit has been on our radar for a couple of years and we’re very excited to have finally been able to get hold of some for our customers to try.

Unfortunately the avocados are a rare find. They are grown in Spain and are only available in December. Usually they are sent to Parisian food markets or sold to top chefs to use in high end restaurants. However, this year M&S has been able to source a small number of the avocados.

This means that you have one month to stock up on them before the supermarket runs out of stock.

Ms Curtis said: "we know they will be in demand and we’ve only been able to get our hands on a limited amount so make sure you get them while you can!”

The new fruit is currently on sale for £2 a pack
